Samhain is the beginning of a time of quiet and stillness and is celebrated by many witches and pagans as the start of a new year. At this point in the year, it is believed that the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. As a result, spirits are more able and likely to visit us. Many people take this opportunity to remember and honour their ancestors in their thoughts, actions, and magical workings at Samhain. Some ways to do this include placing photographs of your ancestors in a special spot, setting an extra place at dinner, cooking and eating their favourite meals, or sharing happy memories with other family members and friends.
Samhain marks the end of autumn and beginning of winter. Life and growth have slowed, the weather becomes colder, and the days shorten. This darker, more restful time is required so that the earth can rest before all life can be reborn in the spring. This cycle can also apply to our thoughts, ideas, and actions. This transitional time is an excellent time for meditation and magical work around changes, transitions, mortality and reincarnation, or beginnings and endings. For example, this is a good time to be thinking about any habits, behaviours, relationships, and other aspects of life that you do not want to carry forward into the new year. Settling debts, making plans for the coming year, removing negativity, and making amends are also worth consideration at this time.
